John started racing Outlaw go-karts at the age of 13 in the 125cc division. He was intrigued by racing at an early age because of the competitiveness of the sport. Once he earned enough seat time in an Outlaw go-kart is was time to step up to the big-time. His father purchased a J&J Chassis - Bailey Brothers powered 360 sprint car and in 1999 they went racing. That year he earned Rookie of the Year honors at Silver Dollar Speedway. During the next few seasons there Gray was able to continue and grow as a driver and a competitor. He earned the respect of fellow raApril 12, 2005 John got his first main event win on August 15. In 2004 things just seemed to continue to click with the addition of crew chief Randy V. Together the two improved to the point that it brought Gray 5 main event wins and the Silver Dollar Speedway track championship.
